De schilder Araz Talib vluchtte uit Kirkuk in Irak en heeft jarenlang in Amsterdam gewoond en gewerkt. Hij maakte een serie schilderijen waarbij hij een bestaand beeld of gebouw uit zijn oorspronkelijke omgeving haalde en in een woestijn portretteerde.
Bij zijn schilderij Toren van Babel maakte ik een gelijknamig gedicht.

TOWER OF BABEL
anyone is gathering
climbing the tower across each and everyone
not a stone left to carry feet
anyone is jostling
up escaping the drought in higher places
that horizonwide doesn't share anything but thirst
anyone giving tongue
shuts his ears for other sounds cacophony rises
voices disappear into noise above only silence
anyone walks
across all heads to not need to hear but
listen up high to celestial promises
